The Musalman

Can you imagine a newspaper coming to your doorstep everyday with a postal stamp and your address handwritten on the front page? And what if the whole newspaper is HANDWRITTEN?

My latest Small picture for the Mint is about how I discovered 'The Musalman' - perhaps, the only HANDWRITTEN newspaper in the world! Beautifully visualised by Archana Sreenivasan, this is definitely my tribute to the team and their love for the labour! Take a look :)

Picture Shuroo

'Picture shuroo', the small picture I did for the Mint newspaper, bring back those nostalgic memories from the Sunday evenings of the Doordarshan era.

Initially set in Kerala, my script gradually shifted towards the north when Rupesh came on board as collaborator, as he grew up in Nasik. But the story remained the same, the moments too, only the characters changed slightly.

The last line in the script said "...the movies bonded us all together, for quite a long time...". And that's the essence of this Small picture too, from north to south, from Malayalam to Marathi - movies bind us all in a shared, collective experience.

'Picture Shuroo' is my bit for the 100th birthday of Indian Cinema we grew up with, a tribute to the film-makers we respect and the stories we'll always cherish!

Nila

My short comic story NILA, based on Bharathapuzha got published in summer edition (April 2013) of Forbes Life magazine. This story is set in Thuruth, Aluva - My Mom's hometown. I was at the happiest while penning this down - the bridge, the trees, the villagers and their innocence - I just had to write my memories down with a pinch of pain in every panel. Thanks much Archana Sreenivasan for the illustrations and clicks, no one could have drawn this better for me!

വിജയത്തിന്റെ നഗരം

ആഗ്രയില്‍ നിന്നും കാലത്തെ യാത്ര തിരിച്ചതാണ്. ഇരുവശവുമുള്ള കാഴ്ചകള്‍ക്കായി കാറിന്റെ കണ്ണാടിച്ചില്ലുകള്‍ താഴ്ത്തി വച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. വെയിലേറ്റു മങ്ങിത്തുടങ്ങിയ കൃഷിയിടങ്ങളുടെ ഇടയില്‍ ഇടയ്ക്കിടെ വന്നു മിന്നിമാഞ്ഞു പോകുന്ന ഇളംമഞ്ഞ  നിറമുള്ള  ചെറുമണിപ്പൂക്കളുടെ വലിയ തോപ്പുകള്‍.ഈ വഴികളിലൂടെയാവാം അക്ബര്‍  ചക്രവര്‍ത്തി കുതിരസവാരി നടത്തി ഗുരുവിനെ സന്ദര്‍ശിക്കാന്‍ പോയിട്ടുണ്ടാവുക. ആഗ്രയില്‍ നിന്നും 40 കിലോമീറ്ററുകള്‍ അകലെയുള്ള ഫത്തേപ്പൂറിലേക്ക്, വിജയത്തിന്റെ നഗരം എന്നര്‍ത്ഥമുള്ള ഫത്തേപ്പൂര്‍ സിക്ക്റിയിലേക്ക്.

My Beloved

My Beloved is my first multi-page comic story out in the real world:) This is a contemporary love story, set in Kerala and Bangalore - portraying Annu and Nandu.

Got published in Mantaray's Mixtape #1 in Jan 2013. Billion thanks to Jasjyot for the gorgeous illustrations and Pratheek thomas, for being there, always.

ഞങ്ങളുടെ കല്യാണം

അന്ന് ഞങ്ങളുടെ കല്യാണമായിരുന്നു. വരന്‍ വീട്ടില്‍ത്തന്നെയുണ്ട്, 

മുറചെക്കനാണ്. ആചാരപ്രകാരം ക്രിസ്ത്യന്‍ രീതിയിലുള്ള കല്യാണമാണ്. ആദ്യവിവാഹമാല്ലാത്തതുകൊണ്ട് ആര്‍ഭാഡങ്ങളും ആഘോഷങ്ങലുമില്ല,  വീട്ടുകാരുടെ സഹകരണവുമില്ല. എങ്കിലും ഞാന്‍ അതിരാവിലെ തന്നെ ഉണര്‍ന്നു. മുറ്റത്ത്‌ വിരിഞ്ഞുനിന്ന വെള്ളനിറമുള്ള  പൂക്കളെല്ലാം കൂടയില്‍ പറിച്ചെടുത്തു, കരുതിവെച്ചിരുന്ന സാറ്റിന്‍ റിബ്ബണ്‍ ചേര്‍ത്ത് കെട്ടി ഭംഗിയുള്ള ബൊക്കെ ഉണ്ടാക്കി. കണ്ണാടിയ്ക്ക് മുന്നില്‍ നിന്ന് തലമുടി വൃത്തിയായി ചീകികെട്ടി. വലിയ കമ്മലും മാലയുമണിഞ്ഞു. കണ്ണെഴുതി, നെറ്റിയില്‍ പൊട്ടുകുത്തി. തലേന്ന് പറിച്ചുവെച്ച് വിരിയിച്ച മുല്ലപ്പൂക്കള്‍ കൊരുത്ത് മുടിയില്‍ വെച്ചു, അതിനുമേലെ തൂവെള്ള നിറമുള്ള നെറ്റ് പുതച്ചു.
